British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
