EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
