Israeli Forces Launches Assault on Iranian Territory as Explosions Heard in Tehran
Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of major blasts shaking Tehran, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially offer further details.
Background: Escalating Strains and Recent Developments
The incident takes place against a background of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Major events preceding this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the region, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials dismissed claims about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation is fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
