Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to question specific calls made by the official, echoing the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
